The integration of content and language in students’ task answer production in the bilingual classroom

2016

The notion of content and language integration has recently become a key topic of inquiry in research on content and language integrated learning and other kinds of bilingual educational programmes. Understanding what integration is and how it happens is of fundamental importance not only for researchers interested in gauging the possibilities and limitations of bilingual programmes, but also for practitioners seeking optimal ways to support student development. This study investigates integration as it takes place in the context of collaborative writing in the classroom. Drawing on conversation analytic methodology, text production is investigated as a social and sequentially evolving phen…

Aikuisten S2-oppijoiden kielenoppimisen kokemuksia selkomukautetun kaunokirjallisuuden parissa

2020

Artikkeli käsittelee oppimisen kokemuksia selkomukautetun kaunokirjallisuuden parissa kotoutumiskoulutuksen lukupiirissä. Aineistona ovat lukupiirien 24 osallistujan haastattelut. Haastattelut on tehty osallistujien toisella kielellä tai lingua franca -englannilla, ja niitä lähestytään fenomenologista ajattelutapaa hyödyntäen kertomuksina oppimisen kokemuksista. Kokemukset vaihtelevat yksilöllisesti, ja tärkeimmiksi merkityskokonaisuuksiksi nousevat sanat, kielen rakenteet ja kielenkäyttö. Kokemusten yksilöllisyyttä voidaan selittää sosiokulttuurisesta teoriasta käsin: vaikka selkomukautettu kaunokirjallisuus tarjoaa lukijalleen runsaasti kielellisiä affordansseja, tarjoumia, kukin lukija t…

Research as Response

2010

In this article research is viewed as a response to a questioning from outside. Knowledge develops in steps, each step understood as a response to the questioning of the previous step. Today’s research is a conglomerate of responses to the questioning of yesterday’s research. Under the current conditions the questioning of knowledge and research is more directed towards the individual than before. The researcher is challenged to answer the questioning directed to his or her research. From this it is argued that the ability of the researcher to respond implies a responsibility. The content of this responsibility depends on the discourse in question. In business management the responsibility…

A Focused Review of Language Use Preceding Death by Execution.

2018

Executions are one form of death that can be assumed to be maximally anxiety provoking. Words spoken by death row inmates moments before their execution can provide valuable insights into people's end-of-life communication needs and themes, conveying what individuals choose to express to others in the face of imminent death. In this focused review, we describe findings from quantitative and qualitative text analysis studies that have analyzed affective experiences and meaning-making attempts in transcriptions of actual statements made by Texas death row inmates. Overall, the most prevalent content themes identified in these final acts of verbal communication in the reviewed studies consiste…

Scoping review and concept analysis of early adolescents’ emotional skills : Towards development of a music therapy assessment tool

2021

Introduction: This paper describes the concept and content of early adolescents’ emotional skills among the general population. The research literature contains many emotional skills-related terms with overlapping meanings, and it can be challenging to determine which are applicable for example, to a music therapy assessment tool. This study comprises the first phase of developing an assessment tool for early adolescents’ emotional skills, namely, determining what is to be assessed. Method: A scoping review of the literature is presented with written definitions of emotional skills-related terms, as well as a concept analysis of the terms performed using Walker and Avant’s method. Results: …

A Pertinência de uma Abordagem Clínica Transcultural a Distúrbios Psicossomáticos na ilha Réunion

2018

Abstract Cultural foundations, beliefs and associated ritual practices delimit the relation to and the representation and lived experience of the body in specific ways. Language is the means through which the cultural specificity of both individual and shared mental content can be explored and worked with in therapy. This article presents beliefs about the body in a patient’s religion of origin and takes up the question of the role of the cultural dimension in psychosomatic phenomena. A case report gives indications of a novel therapeutic approach to this theme and highlights the intrinsic connection between cultural belonging and embodiment. Both the two-year long clinical intervention and…

Watch This! The Influence of Recommender Systems and Social Factors on the Content Choices of Streaming Video on Demand Consumers

2021

Streaming Video-on-demand (SVOD) services are getting increasingly popular. Current research, however, lacks knowledge about consumers’ content decision processes and their respective influencing factors. Thus, the work reported on in this paper explores socio-technical interrelations of factors impacting content choices in SVOD, examining the social factors WOM, eWOM and peer mediation, as well as the technological influence of recommender systems. A research model based on the Theory of Reasoned Action and the Technology Acceptance Model was created and tested by an n = 186 study sample. Results show that the quality of a recommender system and not the social mapping functionality is the …

The process and content of advice giving in support of reflective practice in management consulting

2009

Although consulting has been defined as an ‘advice‐giving activity’ there has not been much research on advice practices in management consulting. In particular, there is a lack of evidence on how advice might assist in supporting another central issue in management work, namely reflective practice. This article approaches consulting from a discursive perspective and views reflective practice at the level of language use. The authors use data on naturally occurring talk during a single Organization Development (OD) consulting process and discursive methodology to examine these conversations, and offer empirical evidence on how advising can support reflective managerial practice. Examples of…

Textbook Practices: Reading Texts, Touching Books

2018

Drawing on practice theory, a programme of research is delineated that focuses on textbook practices. Textbooks and their textual content are seen as materially shaped textual artefacts that are adapted, transformed, contested, subverted, or may even be banned from the classroom. Mapping qualitative research that deals with the use of textbooks, two shifts denoting an increasing recognition of practices in textbook research are identified: a shift from static content to dynamic texts in use and a shift from written language to the material artefact itself. The chapter concludes by outlining possibilities for further research on textbook practices.

The relationship between obsessions and the self: Feared and actual self-descriptions in a clinical obsessive-compulsive disorder sample.

2022

Cognitive models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) posit the relevance of the self in OCD, although the nature of this association is still unclear. We aimed to explore actual and feared selves and its association with obsessions and intrusions in a group of OCD patients. A group of 58 patients with OCD identified their most upsetting obsession and intrusion (non-clinical obsession) experienced in the past three months. These cognitions were classified as either moral-based or autogenous (obsessions n=32; intrusions n=26) or non-moral-based or reactive, depending on their content. Next, patients described their actual self and their feared self, that is, the person they feared being or…
